Curriculum

Math

The Lyceum’s math curriculum combines theoretical perspectives with practical application. Our students finish grade eight with a solid grasp of most math concepts they will encounter on their high school journey. Riz provides an individualized learning plan for each of our students and also involves them in group problem solving such as mod diagrams, building massing and area nets, travelling salesman problems and financial projections.

Science

Studies in Botany, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physics are supported in cross-curricular examinations with practical applications to gardening, cooking, engineering and health studies. In the spring term, they explore the scientific method by developing a science fair project that follows their particular interest.

Novel Study

Texts provide a rich and fertile ground for cross examination of historical contexts and philosophical principles. It also provides a jumping off point for creative expressions in drama, storytelling and art. Our reading list this year included All the Light You Cannot See, The Glass Menagerie, The Crucible, Lord of the Flies, Heart of Darkness, Barometer Rising and Edgar Allen Poe’s gothic fiction.

Bakers Half Dozen

Every Wednesday at 9am, the student-run bakery opens to the public. The bakery is a praxis project assignment which requires students to create and run a business. They learn about product manufacture, marketing and accountancy. This year, they will use the money they have earned to participate in a residency on Gibraltar Point for a week.

The Food Programme

We do school lunch like no other school! Each day, chef Sam Higgs prepares a gourmet meal. Students are involved in preparation and serving of the food. Twice a year, they design and execute a special multi-course menu to be served in the gallery.

The City Project

Architect Raymond Chow is heading a community design project for a site located at Lansdowne and Bloor. Students have considered urban design and architecture through a liveable city model. The project will be realized as site drawings, elevations and a scaled model to be show in The Lyceum Gallery in June.

Art

The school is co-located in They Lyceum Gallery, a contemporary Canadian art gallery and home of The Lyceum Collective. This furnishes students with multiple opportunities to learn about collage, assemblage, drawing, painting, photography and film. Artist practitioners mentor students in studies of various media. Each June is reserved for a student showcase in the gallery.

Radio Nowhere

Every Friday at 11am, we go live to air! All content on Radio Nowhere is written and performed by Lyceum students. TUNE IN.

Pine Project

Students spend every Thursday in nature with The Pine Project at Etienne Brule Park. They learn about orienteering, botany, tracking and survival skills under the mentorship of Pine leaders.

French

Every Monday afternoon, students spend the afternoon with Sam Choisy, who guides them through art and vocabulary studies in French.

Music

Composer and performer Victor teaches music composition and theory. Students are currently completing an animation soundtrack, to be debuted in May.
